‘What do whorehouses, meth labs and YouTube have in common?’ US bandleader Maria Schneider asked recently on a public forum. Her striking question cuts to the heart of her political interests as a strong voice for musical justice. Her 2020 LP Data Lords, a concept album about control over the digital musical economy, won two Grammys. The title points to the great technology giants, and the work has its origins in Schneider's political commitment and critical look at our hyper-digital contemporary world, where a few big corporations capitalize on our data.

As a jazz composer, at Oslo Jazz Festival she will conduct the Norwegian Oslo Jazzensemble. Maria Schneider got to know the Oslo Jazzensemble in 2014. OJE performed with Schneider when she was Artist in Residence at Moldejazz in 2018, when the track "Data Lords" was performed for the first time.
