Spring Ploughing

Edvard Munch, 1916

Horses were a favourite motif for Munch, especially in his early years at Ekely. This is a typical example of how he often painted the animals working on the farm, approaching the viewer from a sharply angled perspective. Farming and other manual work became more important as a subject, the longer he lived at Ekely.
