Samora Pinderhughes is a composer, pianist, film maker and multidisciplinary artist. His work is intimate and carefully crafted, placing radically honest lyrics alongside high-level musicianship and cutting-edge visuals. He is an extraordinary collaborator who has worked with the likes of Robert Glasper, Karriem Riggins and Common under the name August Greene.
Inspired by the black surrealists, he also examines sociopolitical issues via his music. Born and raised in Cuba and the Bay Area, Pinderhughes studied harmony, jazz and composition. Later Pinderhughes moved to New York to study music at Juilliard under Kenny Barron and Kendall Briggs. After meeting MacArthur-winning playwright Anna Deavere Smith, he began to combine film and theatre with his music in radical new ways. His Transformations Suite examined the radical history of resistance within African Diaspora communities and was followed by the critically acclaimed GRIEF album in 2022.
This concert is part of the Jazz at MUNCH series, presented in collaboration with Oslo Jazz Festival.
