MASTERPIECES ON THE MOVE Mini Exhibition
Munch often used several titles for his works, and the audience often thinks that these titles provide a key to understanding the work itself. But did you know that many of the titles we use were not given by Munch himself?

Some of the titles have come into being more or less by chance, while others have been chosen carefully. A good example is Vampire, which Munch originally titled Love and Pain. After his friend, the Polish author Stanistaw Przybyszewski, referred to the picture as Vampire, Munch chose to use this title. Munch’s original title and Przybyszewski’s later retitling can in fact induce viewers to see the work in entirely different lights.
