Self-Portrait in Front of the House Wall

Edvard Munch, 1926

The artist poses beside his yellow villa, which stood on this site until it was demolished in 1960. He is dressed informally but stands proud and upright like the sunflower next to his shoulder. Blazing sunlight breaks up his flesh tones into strokes of green and orange. This is a self-confident artist, comfortable in his own domain.
