Behind the name Arcanum is a Nordic superquartet consisting of Arve Henriksen, Trygve Seim, Anders Jormin, and Markku Ounaskari. All four have played a central role in Nordic jazz over the past few decades, and all have a close connection to the ECM label. The band was formed in 2022, although they have previously played together in various configurations, including in Sinikka Langeland’s Starflowers quintet. Their debut album as a band is being released on ECM, produced by Manfred Eicher.
In Arcanum, they explore each other's musical backgrounds in free, exploratory improvisations into the unknown, both for the audience and the musicians themselves. Their smoking new album features compositions by Seim and Jormin, as well as an interpretation of Ornette Coleman’s ‘What Reason Could I Give’, which showcases the band’s unparalleled interaction and interplay.
Arcanum played an excellent concert at Nattjazz in Bergen in 2024, and now we are massively looking forward to hearing the star-studded ensemble at MUNCH.
