Lili Boulanger (1893–1918) is one of the best known female composers, but was writing at a time when musical life was even more male dominated than today. So her choice of subject matter for Les Sirènes – the sirens of mythology – was a cunning one. The text begins ‘We are the beauties that can charm the strongest of men’. Now it’s the Opera Women’s Chorus, with Tunde Gaspar at the helm, who will awaken these mythological spirits once more.

The concert also includes a selection of other pieces in the French language, by Léo Delibes, Vincent d’Indy, Gabriel Fauré and Charles Trenet. Trois choeurs sur des poésies scandinaves by the Swedish Helena Munktell and Rossini’s Trois choeurs religieux are also part of the programme.
