MUNCH presents ‘Next Level: Gaming Culture in Art Museums’, a conversation where we’ll explore how the gaming and museum sectors can collaborate, and what value such partnerships can bring. Marie Foulston, an award-winning curator notable for her work on the Design/Play/Disrupt Exhibition at the V&A, will present a keynote creatively challenging our assumptions on how museums can exhibit games. The subsequent panel, moderated by Erik Fossum of PressFire, will include Meeka Elliot and Sebastian Mangseth from Tooth Games, independent game developer Erlend Kirkebø, Elise Kaspartu from MUNCH Lab, and Tord Ørnelund Nilsen from Nasjonalmuseet.

MUNCH is home to the world’s largest collection of the iconic artist Edvard Munch. We are constantly exploring ways of making art relevant to a wider audience and how to open up the museum's collection in new ways. Videogames are not simply entertainment. They are also a meaningful, exploratory and playful cultural form that fosters digital and physical communities. Gaming is an integral part of our cultural heritage.

Supported by the Norwegian Film Institute (NFI), and in collaboration with game developers TOOTH Games and Erlend Kirkebø, MUNCH has developed two different gaming experience. Via the games No Honor Amunch Thieves (2023) and MUNCH Arcade (2024), museum visitors encounter Munch in unexpected ways, and gain new perspectives on the artworks.
