Cory Arcangel’s work departs from the phenomena of “click farms”. Several companies now provide boost services where algorithms are used to enhance positive responses to their clients’ social media posts.
Arcangel, who is renowned for playing with digital systems and creating meaningless hacks, has made such a “click bot”. His new work for MUNCH, zara, shows the bot at work, liking posts from the Spanish clothing company, Zara, which, among other controversies, has been criticized for its treatment of workers in their overseas factories. In this way, Arcangel shows the futility of social media likes and the hollowness of the digital heart.
Cory Arcangel (1978) is an American artist, composer, curator, and entrepreneur based in Stavanger. Cory Arcangel will also present new work in the coming contemporary art programme at MUNCH.
