Did you know … that Munch stored paintings outdoors?

Join conservator Erika as she examines one of Edvard Munch's first sketches for the large commissioned assignment to decorate the University Hall in Oslo.

Eleven paintings eventually became what we call the auditorium frieze, while several sketches, details and rejected works are part of MUNCH's collection today. This specific sketch was to develop into the famous work Alma Mater.

How can we preserve a sketch with water and glue? All of Munch's works have their own history and their own need for preservation. This sketch was kept outdoors when Munch was still alive, and therefore has a specific problem: Salts.

Join us behind the scenes and get an insight into how our conservators work to preserve our fragile inheritance from Edvard Munch.
