Sami musician Katarina Barruk’s powerful and ringing voice has built a captive audience over the years. She recently contributed a sound piece to Gwangju Biennale in South Korea, and released her second album, Ruhttuo (Boreal Forest), with Norwegian producers Arnljot Nordvik and Christo Stangness.

Barruk was raised in Lusspie (Storuman) and Gajhrege (Gardfjäll), but is currently based in Ubmeje (Umeå). Barruk's distinctive voice and stage presence creates a space of vulnerability and strength. She delivers a fierce, yet down-to-earth mix of pop music, traditional yoik and improvisational elements. In 2020 Barruk received Sweden’s – SKAP Kulturbärarpris. ‘When I perform,’ she says, ‘I see inner images of places, people and events. I try to take the audience with me to those places and to my emotional state.’
Sami-Norwegian Elina Waage Mikalsen combines her voice, electronic and self built instruments in a musical space between imagination and reality. Untold stories and cosmologies hover over her work. She treats music as a time machine, moving back and forward between past and present.
