Improvising pianist Ayumi Tanaka moved to Oslo from Japan ten years ago, in search of Norway’s creative music scene. She met the distinguished drummer Per Oddvar Johansen and the distinctive bassist Christian Meaas Svendsen shortly after arriving in Norway. They have since struck up a unique rapport in developing their musical language together into more of a chamber ensemble than a jazz piano trio: ‘We share a flow of energy, even in silence,’ she says.

Ayumi Tanaka Trio's debut album for ECM, Subaqueous Silence (2021), is a strikingly original statement which follows their first album Memento. Her approach also includes her awareness of her own cultural roots, in particular classical Japanese music. The trio conveys a special musical atmosphere, with a sense of mystery, poetry and dramatic tension. No other contemporary piano trio sounds like this.
